What’s the boilerplate corporate response? Something like, ‘We appreciate you taking the time to provide us with this feedback?’
It’s certainly too long - I had to finish it quickly before recording this episode, and afterwards I remastered it with half the number of bars in the intro because I thought it dragged on. I’ll wait until you’ve listened to this shorter version; if there’s still a general consensus that it’s crap, I can just revert to one of the previous versions.
Great episode, lots of vivid imagery and dramatic tension. Since this is the last book, I didn’t expect the whole chapter to come to naught, except that now the Prodromos knows Stuart and company are trying to breach the castle. This raises my interest further–how the heck are they going to succeed? Or ARE they? (cue dramatic music sting)
As long as music has been mentioned, I like the more raw sound of the new music. There is one new syncopation in the theme that my ear stumbles over each time, and which I noticed more in the closing music. If it had been like that all along, I think I would have liked it just fine, but now it seems unfamiliar enough that I miss the original rhythm.
This a tiny issue. I’m too enthralled by the story to give it any more thought!
now, see, with the music I was delighted that Zan shared a new variation. I spent time mulling over how to fit the three variations together, because three of them don’t fit together the same way - in my mind - as two. I assigned names/attributes. But more variations would need new ways!!
Thanks, Vibeeen, for asking about more books, I’ve been afraid to, in case the answer is no! (I’d be bummed.)
Now let me see…did I spend any time thinking about the episode itself? Oh, yes! I thought the Vivisector was really most sincerely dead. Nope. I kept hoping that he’d whip off that sad and terrible coat and reveal himself to be an ally. Nope. I was sure our heroes would gain entry. Nope.
Let’s see… We must be overlooking something… What other powers or abilities might a Unique have? Stuart can handle the stone, which I think still has a part to play in the story…
One of the nice surprises in the story is how many times the narrative has taken a 90° turn from where I thought it was going. Stuart has been foiled or set back at many important points in the plot. Since this is the last book, I’m actively looking for a way to a happy ending, and not seeing one!
Stuart has often found allies unexpectedly, although lots of them have been the lens working through the castle - another character we ought not to forget.
I haven’t had expectations of this plot since the young Stuart walked out into that scary hallway - I’m along for the ride!
I like the way the music is evolving. It is growing more depth, more resonance - it feels like there is something menacing hiding around the corner we haven’t glimpsed yet.

Beautiful. This variation is complex and interesting.
I thought you were taking a break, Zan, not working on more music as well as the last book!
Now do we have Prodromos=Ozymandias? I despise him for all that polished steel.

the new beginning of the music sucks.

A voice inside me screamed “Noooooooo!” when I learned this was the last book.
Thanks again for providing us with this story, Zan.
